It's barely 5years since we
passed-out from the prestigious
Nigerian Defence Academy,
Kaduna.
My friend Danladi and I were
posted to a regiment in Baga,
Northeast Nigeria to perform our
primary responsibility (To protect
the territorial integrity of our
country).
On arrival we were posted to
locations and attached
subordinate soldiers. We dug
trenches even as platoon
commanders and developed good
relationship with our
subordinates, For in the Battle
Field we must look out for each
other.... We can only conquer
through teamwork.
After two(2) weeks in our
defensive location, we came
under enemy attack; four(4)
hours of intensive shooting,
Danladi directed the radio guy to
run to a vintage point and
transmit a massage to the
Company Headquarters for
backup as the enemy forces have
neutralized Us. As the soldier
moved Ten(10) meters away, He
was shot on the leg. Danladi
rushed to assist the wounded
soldier to a safer haven; For the
first time I couldn't give Danladi a
covering fire.
No man can ever move faster
than the speed of bullet.
Danladi was shot twice in the
chest.
He paid the ultimate prize
(Died protecting His country and
His comrade)
He shall be laid to rest, a gun
salute shall be tendered in
respect of his bravery. His poor
widow issued the national flag as
a symbol of appreciation from the
country, afterwards left to suffer
the realities of Life......
